Sirianni emphasizes specific character traits when he’s scouting free agents and draft prospects. He’s looking for four traits in particular: toughness, high football IQ, competitiveness and a love of the game.
“In my experience, those four things, when we find players that have those four things, those are the guys you can’t go to a game without,” Sirianni said Thursday. “The players that have those four things, it just feels like every player that I’ve been around, that I am like, ‘I can’t get on the bus or plane without him,’ he has those four qualities. Those guys maximize their potential.”
Despite the slow start, Eagles GM Howie Roseman admitted that the front office and coaching staff are constantly discussing potential fits for their roster. Sirianni wants to gameplan around the players that he already has on his depth chart, but filling out specific roles in his system is just as important.
“You’re looking for the pieces,” Sirianni said. “For a running back, you’re looking to fill the multiple roles that you have or that you look to use. For a wide receiver, you’re looking to fill the roles. That can be done by a committee. You’re looking to fill the roles that maybe you don’t think you have based off of the team you have at this particular time.”
There are plenty of talented free agents remaining on the market. However, Sirianni thinks his character test will help the Eagles filter through the fluff and add players who can help the new staff and roster thrive in Philadelphia.
“Those four things,” Sirianni said. “That is something we’re looking for from each guy.”
